Sensitive Skin Conditions such as Atopic Eczema

DermaTherapy is the first bed linen to receive clearance from the American Food & Drug Administration as a Class I Medical Device for the treatment of mild atopic dermatitis, the most common type of eczema.

Why It’s Effective

DermaTherapy Sheets are designed to be smooth – minimising friction with the skin. Unlike cotton and polycotton sheets, DermaTherapy fabrics are free of short, protruding fibres or “pills” that can create friction and cause irritation. Damp sheets can also lead to increased friction. DermaTherapy has the ability to rapidly wick moisture away from the skin. This allows your skin to slide smoothly across the sleeping surface, making it easier to roll over in bed and improves the quality of sleep.

Durable antimicrobial and “soil release” properties help maintain a clean, fresh sleeping

surface which controls odours and minimises the potential for skin infections. Any creams,

oils or body fluids are washed away from the bedding in a normal wash cycle, making it

especially suitable for those people undergoing medication for dermatological conditions.

As shown in the following microbiological analysis, DermaTherapy is also highly effective in reducing the growth of organisms that are known to adversely affect skin integrity, whereas cotton bedding fabric has virtually no effect.

A recent US study conducted at the Wake Forest School of Medicine demonstrated that DermaTherapy bedding could offer sufferers of mild atopic dermatitis much needed relief from their symptoms. 37 patients completed an eight week trial of sleeping in DermaTherapy bedding. Both the doctors conducting the trial and the patients themselves recorded changes in the severity of the eczema and overall Quality of Life.

Compared with standard cotton bedding both the doctors and the DermaTherapy users reported significant improvements in the severity of their conditions. Using EASI scores the doctors recorded a significant reduction in the severity of eczema and the associated itching over the 8 week trial period with no changes to the medication used by the patients.
The patients also recorded significant reduction in itch and irritation plus an improvement in sleep and a reduction in the use of emollients to control their condition, leading to an improved quality of life. Overall 49% of patients reported a significant improvement in their condition and a further 40% reported some improvement.

Night Sweats and Hot Flushes

The properties of DermaTherapy bedding make it an ideal sleep surface for those people who suffer from night sweats or hot flushes, including:

Women going through the menopause
Patients undergoing chemotherapy
Patients with Parkinson’s Disease

There are also people who are naturally prone to episodes of night sweats. All of these people may suffer disturbed sleep.

Why It’s effective

The uniquely shaped micro-fibres channel moisture away from the skin and distribute it evenly over the entire surface of the sheet. As the moisture evaporates, the wetness and clamminess associated with night sweats is reduced, resulting in a sleeping surface that stays dry and cool throughout the night.

DermaTherapy Bedding is designed to be smooth and soft - minimising friction with the skin, unlike cotton and poly-cotton sheets.

The durable antimicrobial treatment helps maintain freshness and eliminates odours on the fabrics caused by bacteria.

Proven Performance

A recent independent study shows that DermaTherapy Bedding can effectively relieve the discomfort associated with severe night sweats and hot flushes. Substantial improvements have been seen in the amount of uninterrupted sleep, skin dryness, the ability to keep cool and dry, the amount of sweating and the overall level of comfort.

28 women suffering from hot flushes and night sweats were enrolled in the study. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index at commencement of the study and at weeks 2, 4 & 8. An assessment of their quality of life was also made by questionnaire at the same time periods.

Graph of quality of life assessment after 8 weeks

Participants in the study went from an average PSQI score of 9 (poor sleep quality) to 4.2 (good sleep quality) in the 8 week study. Certain elements of the PSQI scores generated significant improvements with “Time needed to fall asleep” and “waking in the middle of the night” both scoring significant reductions. Participants also reported an improvement in their daytime functions.

Improvement in quality of life were perceived almost immediately with the majority of the benefits felt in week 2 continuing on through the remaining 6 weeks.
The study concluded that state of the art fibres such as DermaTherapy can be used to dramatically enhance the therapeutic properties of bed linens in the management of hot flushes and night sweats associated with menopause. To do your own pqsi score click here.

Pressure Sores

Anyone can get a pressure sore if they remain immobile for extended periods of time. Moisture which accumulates under a person in bed can increase the friction between the bed sheet and the person and can accelerate abrasion to the skin, causing it to be more prone to damage and potential infection. DermaTherapy bedding helps relieve some of the main causes of pressure sores.

Why it’s effective

DermaTherapy bedding is specially designed to minimise friction between itself and the skin, whether damp or dry. Skin slides smoothly across the sleep surface to minimise abrasion. There are no short fibres in the bedding to irritate the skin which is in contrast to cotton bedding which has millions of tiny loose fibres that protrude from the surface of the bedding and can rub against sensitive skin.
Cotton bedding absorbs moisture quickly but it pools where it comes into contact with the fabric, making drying by evaporation a long drawn out process. During this time the dampness of the fabric increases its frictional properties making it more difficult for the patient to move over the surface and increasing irritation. By contrast, the wicking properties of DermaTherapy bedding spreads the moisture rapidly over the entire area of the sheet. The sheet dries far more quickly than cotton and this minimises any friction – making the sheet smooth and comfortable.

DermaTherapy bedding incorporates a durable antimicrobial finish that helps to maintain fabric freshness by eliminating odours caused by bacteria and fungi. The bedding stays fresher and cleaner for a longer time between washes. DermaTherapy is highly effective in reducing the levels of micro-organisms important to skin care, such as Staph. Aureus, Staph. Epidermidis and E. Coli. Cotton sheets offer no such protection against these organisms. The antimicrobial does not migrate onto the skin so there is no major risk of resistant bacteria or sensitivity reactions developing.

Finally, DermaTherapy bedding incorporates a “soil release” finish that aids the removal of oily stains and other fluids that might otherwise remain in conventional bedding even after high temperature washing with strong detergents. DermaTherapy bedding is designed to withstand high temperature washes, if required, making it suitable for both home and institutional use.

DermaTherapy bedding creates the smoothest, most non-irritating sleep surface possible for more comfortable sleep and reduced trauma to sensitive skin.
